Synopsis
Verte is 11 years old and has more of an inclination for her fellow Sufi than for witchcraft, the family vocation. This seriously annoys her mother, who sends her to her grandmother’s house every Wednesday to learn the rudiments of the trade.
Packed with humor and full of fine observations on pre-adolescence, this novel by Marie Desplechin, almost a classic of children’s literature, raises fundamental questions: What does it mean to become an adult? What legacy do our parents leave us? But also, how can we build ourselves despite our family history?
